The measurement of corneal epithelial thickness has become an increasingly used tool in the diagnosis of different corneal pathologies. To use this tool reliably, one must be familiar with the characteristics of the epithelial map of the healthy local population, and corroborate if these measurements are comparable with populations from other countries, to determine if the same diagnostic criteria used internationally can be applied. Methodology: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted using secondary data from an anonymized database of the Virgilio Galvis Ophthalmological Center (Centro Oftalmológico Virgilio Galvis). Objective: To evaluate the association of central and peripheral corneal epithelial thickness, measured by optical coherence tomography, with age and sex in adult patients at the Virgilio Galvis Ophthalmological Center (Centro Oftalmológico Virgilio Galvis). Results: In a sample of 222 eyes of adult patients who underwent corneal epithelial mapping with topography and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) using the MS-39 device (Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Florence, Italy), it was found that the average central thickness was thicker in men than in women with statistical significance in all sectors except the nasal sector. The correlations of central and peripheral epithelial thicknesses with age were weak. Conclusion: Men present a thicker corneal epithelium than women in all areas, although with different statistical significance depending on the sector. Changes in thickness in the superior and inferior sectors appear to be related to age, especially when comparing older patients with younger ones.spa
