Ninety-eight patients distributed into three groups were studied (A: local anesthetic; B: local anesthetic + morphine; C: local anesthetic + fentanyl). The need for reinforcement was the same in all, but the latency time was statistically different between the three groups ( A: 7.46 ± 3.28; B: 5.59 ± 3.91; and, C: 3.61 ± 2.20 minutes). The mixtures with opioids presented more complications derived from the technique. The persistence of postoperative analgesia for more than twelve hours was also significantly different between the opioid groups versus the control (A: 33.33% of patients; B: 82.20%; and, C: 77.78%). This study demonstrates the usefulness of adding opioids to the mixture used in peribulbar anesthesia in cataract surgery.eng
