Homofobia en estudiantes de medicina: una revisión de los diez últimos años

dc.description.abstractAntecedentes: Se entiende por homofobia una actitud general negativa hacia personas homosexuales. La homofobia tiene implicaciones importantes en salud pública para la prevención de la infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). Algunos datos muestran que la homofobia es frecuente en médicos. Sin embargo, el fenómeno ha sido menos evaluado en estudiantes de medicina. Objetivo: Conocer la prevalencia y algunas variables asociadas de homofobia en estudiantes de medicina durante la última década. Método: Se realizó una revisión sistemática de artÍculos resultados de trabajos de investigación formal en Ebsco, Imbiomed, Lilacs, MedLine, Ovid y ProQuest. Se revisaron artÍculos desde 1998 a 2007 escritos en español, inglés o portugués. Para la búsqueda se usaron como palabras claves "homophobia ", "homosexuality " y "medical students ". Se realizó un análisis descriptivo de los datos presentados en cada uno de los artÍculos. Resultados: Se identificaron seis investigaciones. Sólo dos artÍculosinformaban la prevalencia de homofobia. Entre el 10% y el 25% de los estudiantes informó un grado importante de homofobia. La homofobia se asociaba a las creencias religiosas, sexo masculino, menos años de edad, poca información sobre temas sexuales, no haber tenido relaciones sexuales, orientación polÍtica de derecha y bajos ingresos económicos. Conclusiones: La homofobia está presente en por lo menos el 10% de los estudiantes de medicina. Las creencias religiosas y el sexo masculino son las variables asociadas más importantes. Estos hallazgos tienen implicaciones relevantes en salud pública para la prevención de la infección por VIH. dc.description.abstractenglishBackground: Homophobia is understood as a general negative attitude towards homosexual people. Homophobia has important public health implications for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Some data show that homophobia is common in doctors. However, the phenomenon has been less evaluated in medical students. Objective: To know the prevalence and some associated variables of homophobia in medical students during the last decade. Method: A systematic review of articles resulting from formal research work in Ebsco, Imbiomed, Lilacs, MedLine, Ovid and ProQuest was carried out. Articles from 1998 to 2007 written in Spanish, English or Portuguese were reviewed. For the search, "homophobia", "homosexuality" and "medical students" were used as keywords. A descriptive analysis of the data presented in each of the articles was carried out. Results: Six investigations were identified. Only two articles reported the prevalence of homophobia. Between 10% and 25% of students reported a significant degree of homophobia. Homophobia was associated with religious beliefs, male sex, younger age, little information about sexual issues, not having had sexual relations, right-wing political orientation, and low income. Conclusions: Homophobia is present in at least 10% of medical students. Religious beliefs and male sex are the most important associated variables. These findings have relevant public health implications for the prevention of HIV infection. More research is needed on this topic, particularly in Latin America.[Campo-Arias A, Herazo E.
