dc.description.abstractEl sÍndrome de intestino irritable (SII) es un desorden gastrointestinal funcional (DGIF) que hace parte de la categorización según los criterios Roma III, como un desorden funcional del intestino. Debido a su alta prevalencia aproximada del 4 al 20% a nivel mundial, se considera una enfermedad de gran impacto por afectar la calidad de vida. La manifestación clÍnica depende del sÍntoma predominante: dolor o disconfort, diarrea,estreñimiento o un cuadro mixto. Su diagnóstico esbásicamente clÍnico por medio de los criterios de Roma III, descartando enfermedad orgánica. Las alternativas terapéuticas del SII son para el control sintomático de la enfermedad y mejorÍa de la calidad de vida, nunca como tratamiento definitivo. El objetivo del artÍculo es producir una revisión actualizada de la temática para conocer, entender y abarcar una patologÍa que en los últimos años ha generado un alto compromiso en el paciente.[Gómez DF, Rojas LMA, Morales JG, Mújica SC. dc.description.abstractenglishIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) that is part of the categorization according to the Rome III criteria, as a functional disorder of the intestine. Due to its high prevalence of approximately 4 to 20% worldwide, it is considered a disease of great impact as it affects quality of life. The clinical manifestation depends on the predominant symptom: pain or discomfort, diarrhea, constipation or a mixed condition. Its diagnosis is basically clinical through the Rome III criteria, ruling out organic disease. The therapeutic alternatives for IBS are for symptomatic control of the disease and improvement of quality of life, never as definitive treatment. The objective of the article is to produce an updated review of the topic to know, understand and cover a pathology that in recent years has generated a high level of commitment in the patient.[Gómez DF, Rojas LMA, Morales JG, Mújica SC.
